Advanced Networks was formed in March 2007, and is owned and operated around core networking competencies built from over 20 years of communications and networking experience. Craig Potter – Managing Director – launched the business operating as an independent professional and leveraging his many years of knowledge, experience and industry contacts to provide networking expertise, design and consultancy to the business community.
Craig started his career as an Electrical Apprentice in the NSW State Government Rail Authority in 1983 attaining a trade qualification 4 years later. It was also when he first became interested in information technology, and bought his first home computer and programming manual. Craig spent the next ten years working with several data & telephony companies in various positions of responsibility and slowly evolved his computer skills. Experience in data cabling and design, telephony systems and configuration, office and computer system relocations, project management and company management were all gained during this time on high value projects and high profile customers such as Citibank.
In 1996, Craig started with News Ltd - a division of News Corp and one of
Australia’s biggest companies - as a network and telecommunications technician. He quickly learnt the systems within the head office at Surry Hills and was soon placed in charge of designing and installing the network, communications and cabling infrastructure for the building during a two and a half year refurbishment project. This responsibility encompassed relocation of not only network infrastructure, but telephony, radio and in house TV systems for over 1500 people within the main building. These new designs and installations were implemented whilst maintaining current production systems for a 24/7 deadline driven business that relied heavily on all these technologies. The project was completed in 1999 and Craig moved straight into Y2K assessment and preparation.
With the success of the refurbishment and Y2K behind, Craig moved into the News Ltd national team as a Network Engineer specializing in design and operations of the national Cisco driven Wide Area Network. This network comprised eighty plus Cisco routers connecting fifteen News Ltd business units across the country with a variety of network technologies including; ATM, Ethernet, Frame Relay, ISDN, E1, xDSL. With 132 publications across the country and multiple deadlines 24/7/365, this was a challenge that was met and welcomed. Within 3 years Craig was promoted to Senior Network Engineer for News Ltd with responsibility for architecting design and policy for the national business. In 2004, he was made National Network Manager and was reporting to the CTO and CIO directly on all aspects of the national network architecture and operations. As manager, he was responsible for the multi-million dollar network budget and was involved in complex carrier negotiations impacting the national business and subsidiary business units.
With these years of experience with a many differing network technologies and managing networks in a complex and dynamic environment, and with experience on circuit switched voice technologies in high end PABX’s such as the Avaya G3r, you can be assured Craig and the team at Advanced Networks can provide the highest level of professionalism to your business with any networking or telephony requirements you may have. Advanced Networks is small enough to be committed to you on a personal level ensuring you get exactly want you want – not just what is available off the shelf - but big enough and experienced enough to handle any project your business is running.
